Tea Wisdom for the Coming Year

“Tea is the elixir of life.” – Lao Tsu

Since its legendary discovery by Chinese Emperor Shen Nong over 5,000 years ago, tea has become far more than boiling water poured over leaves and steeped.

During its long history, tea has become a commodity, a meditation or a means to relax and center oneself, a beneficial elixir, and even a ceremony that can bring about peace between people and even nations. Tea has inspired poets, songwriters, philosophers, and everyday people for centuries.

At Sir Jason Winters International, we love talking about all things tea-related. Now, at the turn of the New Year, we wanted to share some of our favorite tea quotes. Many of these are about the wisdom, benefits, and overall goodness of tea. So sit back and relax with your favorite cup of tea and allow yourself to indulge!

Tea for Peace of Mind

“My dear, if you could give me a cup of tea to clear my muddle of a head, I should better understand your affairs.”Charles Dickens

“Drink your tea slowly and reverently, as if it is the axis upon which the world earth revolves – slowly, evenly, without rushing toward the future. Live the actual moment. Only this moment is life.: – Thich Nhat Hah, ‘The Miracle of Mindfulness’

The relaxing and almost meditative quality of tea comes from enjoying a cup or even a pot of tea at various times of the day. Both nutritionists and meditation masters believe that tea serves to relieve stress and gives us a kind of relaxed attention.

Scientists have found that this relaxing quality is because of the amino acid theanine. Studies show that theanine can reduce stress levels. When combined with the naturally occurring caffeine within tea, it boosts awareness and provides a sense of well-being and relaxation. And there really is nothing like cradling a hot cup of tea between your hands and relaxing far away from the winter chill!

Tea and Good Health

“Better to be deprived of food for three days than tea for one” Ancient Chinese Saying

“Tea is a miraculous medicine for the maintenance of health. Tea has an extraordinary power to prolong life. Anywhere a person cultivates tea, long life will follow.– Eisai Kitcha Yojoki, (13th Century)

Drinking a daily cup of tea will surely starve the apothecary.” Chinese Proverb

“My experience…convinced me that tea was better than brandy, and during the last six months in Africa I took no brandy, even when sick taking tea instead.” – Theodore Roosevelt

We drink tea when we are sick or when we need a warm pick-me-up to feel better.   Indeed, researchers have found that the phytochemicals found in tea provide potent antioxidants to protect us from the effects of toxins in our environment that we encounter every day.  Often, when we feel the onset of a cold, some of those health-promoting substances within tea can act to help us feel better.  These include catechins and theanine, which are antioxidants that fight free radicals that can damage cells within the body.

Scientists at Harvard University and other medical research centers around the world have conducted decades of study. Many of these studies indicate that tea drinkers of both black and green tea are less prone to some chronic diseases. Among these diseases are diabetes, cardiovascular disease, liver disease, Parkinson’s disease.  Researchers have also found evidence that drinking tea regularly may reduce the risk of some forms of cancer, including breast, colon, and oral cancers. Some scientists believe that this added benefit is due because of the polyphenols found in the Camellia sinensis or tea plant.

Other potential health benefits of tea include promoting weight loss, lowering cholesterol, giving slight protection to the skin by providing some UV protection, and promoting better overall dental health. Scientific studies conducted in China, the United States, and the United Kingdom also show that tea may even act to slow cognitive decline in patients with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

While all of this might sound promising, scientists recommend that when consuming tea, be careful not to drink it while it’s too hot. Researchers have found that consuming very hot drinks might increase the risk of esophageal cancer.  They recommend allowing your tea to cool for several minutes before drinking it.

Tea and Friendship

“Usually, if you stop for tea, someone will feel the desire to join you.” – Sunita Williams

“What is the most wonderful thing for people like myself who follow the Way of Tea? My answer: the oneness of host and guest created through ‘meeting heart to heart’ and sharing a bowl of tea.” – Soshitsu Sen, “Tea Life, Tea Mind”

My copper kettle whistles merrily
And signals that it is time for tea.
The fine china cups are filled with the brew.
There’s lemon and sugar and sweet cream, too.
But, best of all there’s friendship, between you and me.
As we lovingly share our afternoon tea.” – Marianna Aroli

According to tea master, Sen-no-Rikyu in “The Way of Tea,” written in the 16th Century, there are four essential elements needed for Tea’s art. These elements are harmony, respect, tranquility, and purity. Master Sen-No-Rikyu turned raised tea into both a philosophy and an art form and helped bring about the chanoyu or what we know today as the formal Japanese tea ceremony.

While taking tea with friends doesn’t have to be a formal affair.  Tea can be as casual or as formal as you wish. When it’s between friends and loved ones, there are no rules for tea.  However, there is something about the almost ceremonial quality of making teatime special.  Putting on the kettle and serving tea in a special pot alongside home-baked treats just for the sheer enjoyment of it can be an unexpected and memorable treat.

By sitting and having tea with one or more friends and allowing the fragrance, the warmth, and the tastes to relax you, the time becomes exceptional.  You may find that by simply taking time out of your day and spending it with others, you’ll want to make tea and friendship a regular habit throughout the coming New Year.

With that, we will leave you with one final quote that we love:

“Tea is liquid wisdom.” – Traditional Saying

Flavanols in Tea Could Help Lower Blood Pressure

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a medical condition that affects one out of every three adults in the United States. Commonly referred to as “the silent killer,” high blood pressure can take several years before manifesting any symptoms. If left untreated for a long time, it can place someone at risk for developing heart disease or increased potential for a heart attack or stroke.

A group of scientists recently found that consuming foods rich in flavanols, which are in abundance in fresh foods such as berries, apples, green leafy vegetables, and tea, seemed to significantly lower incidences of hypertension or high blood pressure.

What Are Flavanols?

Flavanols are micronutrients found in fresh fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts such as pecans and green and black teas from the Camellia sinensis plant. These foods can act as natural antioxidants that can defend the body from damaging free radicals that can damage the cells within the body and potentially make them more susceptible to illness and disease.

Foods rich in antioxidants or flavanols show great promise in helping fend off free radicals, which are all around us as smoke, pollution, or other environmental factors. These free radicals can contribute to both the aging process and illness.

How Flavanols Can Potentially Improve Good Health

After all the holiday overindulgence, you might think about your resolutions for the coming New Year. During holiday get-togethers with your family and friends, you might have heard mention of either the Mediterranean or DASH diets. DASH stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension, and the Mediterranean diet relies on consuming mostly fresh foods that are high in flavanols and other nutrients and are more healthy.

The DASH diet plan, which is promoted by the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), was developed after researchers found that certain foods actually lowers blood pressure and cholesterol levels and can reduce the risk of developing heart disease.

The DASH Plan Emphasizes:

  • Consuming fruits, vegetables, and whole grains
  • Low-fat or fat-free dairy products
  • Limits the consumption of foods with high levels of fat, tropical oils, such as coconut, palm kernel, and palm oils as well as fatty meats
  • Foods that are low in processed sugar and flour and sugary beverages such as sodas or juices containing sugar or high fructose corn syrup

An international team of researchers from the University of Reading in the United Kingdom, Cambridge University, and the University of California Davis analyzed a study conducted by a section of the European Prospective Investigation to Cancer Study (EPIC), which spanned two decades and included some 25,600 participants conducted the study. They wanted to learn whether there was any connection between the consumption of foods rich in flavanols and the lowering of blood pressure, according to the data provided.

In a recently released peer-reviewed journal, the scientists found that drinking either green or black tea was just as effective in lowering participants with blood pressure as going on either a Mediterranean Diet or the DASH diet plan.

The research team focused on flavan-3-ol, one of six distinct classes of polyphenolic compounds that are most likely found within the diets of participants in the UK and the United States. The researchers found that study participants who had a higher predisposition to high blood pressure seemed to see more of a reduction in their blood pressure numbers when consuming foods and beverages high in this micronutrient, such as black and green tea.

The author of the study, Gunter Kuhnle, said in a recent interview, “Previous studies of large populations have always relied on self-reported data to draw conclusions, but this is the first epidemiological study of this scale to objectively investigate the association between a specific bioactive compound and health,” Kuhnle said. “We are delighted to see that in our study, there was also a meaningful and significant association between flavanol consumption and lower blood pressure.”

While most nutritional studies are for a shorter period and involve participants keeping their own food diary, in this study, researchers instead relied on urine samples and taking their blood pressure to determine flavanol levels. Kuhnle was fascinated by the subject because to him, finding out the connection between the micronutrient and how it could potentially affect a person’s health was a bit like being a detective.

Why Tea Rather than Coffee?

Of course, we admit to being partial to all the potential tremendous benefits of drinking tea every day. Not only can it be a relaxing part of your day and reduce your stress levels, as you can see, there are potential health benefits from consuming a drink like tea which is high in antioxidants.

However, we understand that some people may be more inclined to drink coffee instead. Kuhnle agrees that the two drinks do tend to replace one another depending on where you live.

The multi-university research team found that study participants in the United Kingdom did tend to drink more tea throughout the day. In contrast, those in the United States tended to drink coffee more often. Other recent scientific studies have found that coffee does contain some antioxidants; however, the researchers in the University of Reading study found that coffee drinkers did tend to have lower flavanol levels.

During a press conference, Kuhnle told reporters that drinking coffee is perfectly fine; however, enjoying a cup of tea during the day as well does seem to help reduce blood pressure levels.

Here on our blog, we’ve often talked about how health-conscious people can turn to tea in place of other drinks. We’ve also shown the potential health benefits of drinking tea every day. Our Sir Jason Winters Green Herbal Tea Bags and our Sir Jason Winters Pre-Brewed Green Herbal Tea are packed with powerful antioxidants like EGCG (epigallocatechin-3 gallate) and flavanols that have been shown to beneficial against cardiovascular diseases such as high blood pressure.

While there are various possible benefits of drinking tea, such as potentially lowering blood pressure/reducing your risk of developing hypertension, we do recommend that if you have pre-existing health or have been prescribed certain medications such as blood thinners, it’s important that you always discuss any changes in your daily diet with your doctor or healthcare professional.

Are You Getting the Best Out of Your Cup of Tea?

Outside of water, tea is the most widely consumed drink in the world. Since its legendary discovery in 2797 bce by Emperor Shen Nung, over its long history, tea drinking has been steadily on the rise globally because of its health benefits and its stimulating and relaxing properties. Today Industry experts estimate that just 21% of the US population considers themselves to be tea aficionados.

Ask any tea connoisseur, and they will tell you that there’s definitely an art to making a perfect cup of tea.  Even when you have access to the best tea in the world, there are many mistakes you can make, which can potentially ruin your cup of tea.  These mistakes can range from not using the right kind of water, heating tea water too quickly or too hot, to steeping tea bags too long or not long enough. Even having the correct type of teapot or teacup can either enhance or take away from a pleasurable tea-drinking experience.

Here are some ways that you can make tea time more relaxing and enjoyable every time.

Choosing the Best Water

A document dating back to China’s Ming Dynasty states,

“The inherent quality of tea must be expressed in water. When tea that is of a lower quality meets with water that is of higher quality, the tea is enhanced. When tea of a higher quality meets with a water that is of lower quality, the tea is also lowered.”

According to The Classic of Tea” by tea master Lu Yu, mountain spring water is considered the highest quality, while river water is average, and well water is thought to be inferior. If you have hard water, the high mineral content can inevitably affect the taste of tea. For those who live in the city and have tap water that has been treated, this can also take away from the taste of your tea.

Tea Water Should Be Hot – But Not Too Hot

In China, the art of finding the right temperature for tea is described as Sheng Pen or the “Sound of Distinguishing.” This means that based on the sense of sound, you hear when water reaches the proper temperature. Rather than listening for the whistle on your tea kettle, which indicates your water is boiling. Instead, listen for a low hum or when small bubbles that are the size of fish eyes begin to rise inside the tea kettle.

Steep Your Tea for the Right Amount of Time

When the tea is not allowed to steep long enough, the taste of it can be watery and weak. If tea is allowed to steep for too long, it can end up tasting bitter, and all of the subtle flavors within it have been muddied or even lost entirely.

Of course, not all teas are the same when it comes to the perfect amount of time that bags or loose leaves should be allowed to steep. Some teas, such as white teas, are more delicate and take between one to three minutes to steep. Green tea takes about three to five minutes, and some teas like black or herbal teas may require five minutes or as long as 8 -10 minutes to get the best flavor.

Don’t Toss That Teabag Too Soon!

Many tea drinkers have been given the idea that a tea bag or tea leaves can only be used once. While that might be an excellent tactic for selling more tea, that isn’t necessarily the case. By using a teabag two or even three times, each brewing can offer a whole other realm to your tea in terms of taste experiences.

Pay Attention to What You Add to Your Cup of Tea

Turning to tea instead of carbonated or other sugary drinks can help you cut down on calories. However, when you add milk, cream, sugar, or honey, you’re also adding more calories. According to recent studies, such as one conducted at the University of Illinois between 2001 and 2012, the number of calories per cup can be increased by 69 calories or more.

You can lessen calories and still have a sweet cup of tea by adding a non-caloric sweetener such as stevia, or opting for low-fat milk in place of cream or whole milk.

Choose the Right Cup

Making the best choice of teacup is one of the most overlooked aspects of brewing the best cup of tea.

Many tea drinkers simply choose a readily available coffee mug and use that to drink their tea from. The inside of this type of cup may not always be completely smooth. Any inclusions or porous surface areas can absorb the tea and can affect future cups of tea.

Earthenware or ceramic can retain heat longer, and when they have been appropriately glazed, it can prevent the transfer of tastes from previous cups of tea. For many people, this type of cup is the most comfortable. Tea experts recommend that when choosing just the right ceramic mug, make sure that the rim is thin enough to allow the tea to roll off the edge of the cup and onto your tongue. That way, you can more fully appreciate the sophisticated tastes within your tea.

  • Glass – When opting for a glass teacup, be sure to choose one that is thick enough. Because hot water or tea is being poured into the cup, it can crack if the glass is too thin.
  • Porcelain –Tea experts have long regarded porcelain teacups as the best choice of all because it doesn’t absorb the taste of the tea. One disadvantage of porcelain or bone china cups is their tendency to cool quickly. If you are savoring your tea, you could find it has gone cold before you finish.
  • Stainless Steel – If you have a daily commute, sometimes a stainless steel commuter mug is your only option. The problem with this type of cup is that stainless steel cups don’t allow for tea to cool so that you can take a sip without getting burned.
  • Plastic – It’s a good idea to avoid using plastic tea cups, if at all possible. Some of the plastics used in the manufacture of plastic tea cups or mugs could leach chemicals into your tea. If you absolutely must use a cup made of plastic, make sure that it is BPA or Bisphenol A –free.

There are few things more enjoyable or relaxing than enjoying a cup of tea. By following these tips, you can turn the ritual of brewing your next cup into an almost meditative experience.

Holiday Tea Get Together Ideas

This Holiday season will likely be a bit different from previous years for most people. Because of health concerns over the current pandemic, many families have opted to stay in place rather than undertake travel to see their loved ones.

If you and your family are opting to stay home, why not make the most of family time and celebrate the season by creating delicious treats that are sure to bring warmth and cheer?

Try to remember that the holidays are a stressful time for everyone.  Whether you are celebrating Thanksgiving Day, Hanukkah, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Yule, Boxing Day, Kwanzaa, New Year’s Eve, or New Year’s Day, pay attention to what truly matters.  When we focus on family, food, shelter, health, and gratitude,  it becomes much easier to create wonderful holiday memories.

We’ve assembled a few seasonal favorites to enjoy after a holiday meal or even when taking tea on a snowy afternoon by the fire.

Walnut Rum Cake

This moist cake is a definite holiday favorite that incorporates the taste of hot buttered rum. It makes the perfect companion to enjoy after dinner or with a hot cup of your favorite Sir Jason Winters tea.

Preheat the oven to 325°F.  Grease and lightly flour two round cake pans and set aside.

1 cup whole milk

1 tablespoon white vinegar

3 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup  or 2 sticks of softened, unsalted butter

2 3/4 cup granulated sugar

4 large eggs

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

1/4 cup spiced rum

3/4 cup chopped walnuts

Whisk together milk and vinegar in a small bowl. In a second bowl, combine flour, cinnamon powder, and baking soda and set this aside.  In a large mixing bowl, beat sugar and butter together until creamy. Add one egg at a time to this mixture. Next, add the vanilla. Add one cup at a time of the flour mixture, alternating with the milk and vinegar mixture and adding a bit of the spiced rum as you go. Lastly, fold the chopped walnuts into the batter.

Pour equal amounts of the batter into your prepared baking pans. Bake between 55 minutes to an hour and five minutes or until a toothpick inserted at the center comes out clean.  Allow the cakes to cool completely on a rack before removing them from the pan.

For the chocolate filling, you will need

1/2 cup Cocoa powder, natural unsweetened

3 1/2 cups powdered sugar

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 tsp vanilla

1 cup softened, unsalted butter

4 Tablespoons of heavy whipping cream

Beat softened butter until smooth. Beat in half of the powdered sugar until smooth. Add cocoa powder, vanilla, and as much cream as needed to keep the filling smooth but not too thin. This filling will go between the two cake rounds.

To make the glaze to go over the top of your cake, combine

½ cup butter

½ cup brown sugar

1 Tablespoon of rum.

Heat in a small saucepan until the sugar and butter combine. Drizzle mixture over the top of your cake and serve.

Almond Butter Cookies

Kids of every age love making cookies cut into holiday shapes and sprinkled with colored sugar and other festive edible toppings.

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Line baking sheets with parchment paper and set aside.

3 cups unbleached, all-purpose flour

2 teaspoons baking powder

1 cup granulated sugar

1 cup (2 sticks) salted butter, cold & cut into chunks

1 large egg

1 tsp pure vanilla extract

1/2 tsp pure almond extract

Whisk together flour and baking powder and set aside. In a large mixing bowl, blend sugar and butter until light and fluffy. Add the egg along with vanilla and almond extract.  Gradually add flour, one cup at a time.  If the dough has a crumbly consistency, knead it on a lightly floured surface until smooth.

Take a portion of the dough and roll it out on a lightly floured surface until 1/4 inch thick.

Use cookie cutters to cut out holiday shapes and place them on parchment-lined baking sheets.  Place the cookies and baking sheets into the freezer for 10 minutes. Near-freezing the cookies will help them maintain their shape while they bake.  Remove from the oven when they appear just slightly underdone. Allow them to cool. They will become firmer.

Spread with your favorite icing and add colored sugar, colored sprinkles, red hots, or candy kisses and serve.

French Buche de Noel

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees.

4 eggs

1 cup granulated sugar

½ teaspoon vanilla

1 cup sifted cake flour

½ teaspoon baking powder

½ teaspoon salt

2 Tablespoons of Rum

Powdered sugar

Separate eggs, then beat egg yolks with mixer until thick. Gradually add half of the sugar to the egg yolks, stirring constantly. Add vanilla.

In a separate bowl, beat egg whites until soft peaks appear. Gradually add the second ½ cup of sugar until soft peaks begin to appear in the mixture. Add yolk mixture, flour, baking powder, and salt until thoroughly combined. Pour the batter into a greased and floured 15 ½ x 10 x 1-inch baking pan.

Bake at 375 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes. Remove the pan from the oven and begin loosening the edges of the cake.  Turn onto a towel that has been sprinkled with sifted powdered sugar. Sprinkle the cake with rum.

From the long side, roll the cake and towel together and allow it to cool.

For the filling, you may use the same chocolate filling for the walnut rum recipe above.  Unroll the cake and spread half of the filling and then re-roll the and frost the roll with the remaining half of the icing and serve.

If you want something light and savory to go with the sweet, you can add warm baby portobello mushrooms stuffed with crab to enjoy along with side traditional finger sandwiches.

Creamy Crab Stuffed Baby Portobellos

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.

12 baby portobello mushrooms cleaned with stems removed

Olive oil

1 8 oz. package of cream cheese softened

1/2 cup bread crumbs

2 cloves minced garlic

1/2 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1/2 cup finely chopped green onions

1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese

2–3 tablespoons fresh chopped Italian parsley

1 cup cooked crab or imitation crab meat, finely chopped

Lightly brush or spray portobello mushroom caps with olive oil.  Arrange on a baking sheet, cap-side down, and bake for two minutes to remove excess water.

Mix cream cheese, bread crumbs, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, green onions, Parmesan, parsley, and crab together in a large mixing bowl.

Turn the mushroom caps over and fill each with 1 1/2 tablespoons of the crab meat filling.  Bake for 20 minutes, then turn on the broiler for one minute to allow the tops to lightly brown. Remove from the baking sheet and onto a decorative plate and serve.

Coffee or Tea: Which Has the Most Potential Health Benefits?

We’ll be honest. Most people drink coffee and even tea for the caffeine. Those who need a bigger boost drink coffee, and those who can’t stand the taste of coffee or want a smaller pick-me-up to choose the tea.

Both drinks have received a lot of studies because they are so popular. Many potential health benefits have been found for both drinks, but which one has the most benefits? That’s what we’re going to explore.
Coffee
Yes, we’re a tea company so there may be a bit of bias here, but let’s give the coffee a fair shake. In 2005, a review of nine studies on coffee and type 2 diabetes showed that those who drank a lot, 6-7 cups daily(!) were 35% less likely to have this condition. 4-6 cup drinkers had a 28% lower risk.

Another study in Australia looked at 18 studies and claimed that you get about a 7% drop in the odds of type 2 diabetes for each cup of coffee you drink. Furthermore, caffeine didn’t seem to be a part of it. The same results happened for decaf drinkers. It is believed that the high levels of antioxidants and minerals in coffee cause this effect. Also, because of the antioxidants, coffee has a protective benefit against heart disease and strokes, even if you only drink 1-3 cups a day according to studies by Kaiser Permanente.

There is also evidence that coffee consumption can lower the risk of Parkinson’s and dementia, and that seems to be due to the caffeine, but researchers aren’t quite sure why it works. As far as cancer goes, the only cancer coffee seems to potentially help prevent is liver cancer. Like Parkinson’s studies, researchers don’t know why, but the data is consistent.

There seems to be a correlation between how much coffee you drink and how much of a protective effect it has. However, most of us know the effects of too much coffee! More on that in a bit when we talk about caffeine. Let’s look at tea now.
Tea
We’ve written several articles in the past about the possible benefits of green tea consumption. Let’s review some highlights.

Like coffee, tea contains a lot of antioxidants. One study found that male green tea drinkers reduced their chances of getting prostate cancer by approximately 50%, and female drinkers reduced their chances of breast cancer and colorectal cancer.
Also, tea seems to have a protective effect against Parkinson’s and dementia. This makes sense if it is the caffeine that creates the benefit. Tea contains L-theanine which increases GABA, a neurotransmitter that reduces anxiety and raises dopamine production.

There is also the famous compound EGCG found in green tea. This is the main catechin in tea and a powerful antioxidant.

How much do you need to drink to see benefits? The usual recommendation is 4-5 cups a day. Unlike coffee, this is a tolerable amount for many, especially if you spread it out.

What About The Downsides?
Caffeine is a stimulant we’re all familiar with, whether from coffee, tea, chocolate, or colas. Each of us reacts differently to it and has a different level of tolerance. A long-term coffee drinker can down 10 cups a day to stay awake, while someone who rarely has caffeine might get jittery with just a cup of green tea!

Excessive caffeine can make you jittery and anxious, and it can also make it harder to sleep. Caffeine increases the level of cortisol in the blood. Cortisol is a crucial hormone, but it is also one way our body signals stress. Bumping it up too high for too long can make you feel burned out or make it hard to relax.

This is one area where green tea is the superior drink. It still has caffeine to wake you up, but also has compounds that calm down the brain. If you’re worried about needing to drink more to stay awake, that’s a good thing! More tea will put you closer to that 4-5 cups/day recommendation. It’ll also increase your fluid intake, which is something most Americans are terrible at doing.

Another downside for coffee is its acidity. Anyone who gets heartburn or has esophageal reflux may need to avoid coffee to avoid aggravating the body. Also, the tannins in coffee are so strong that some people can’t stand the flavor. There’s a reason that the most popular coffee drinks use milk, sugar, and flavorings to disguise it, but those also make coffee far more fattening!

In fact, it may be best to avoid all forms of milk in coffee or tea if you’re drinking for health. Milk will bind with some of the helpful compounds and prevent absorption.
The Verdict
Studies do suggest, coffee and tea both seem to have possible health benefits that are similar despite their chemical differences. Some people even drink both to get a balanced overlap. The best guideline for which to choose is your sensitivity to caffeine and acids, and your tolerance for bitter flavors.

Can you drink your coffee black and don’t get an upset stomach or the jitters? Coffee may be the choice for you then.

Green tea is tolerated by nearly everyone. It’s not as bitter, and like coffee comes in a wide variety of flavors. Most poeple can also drink more of it without getting jittery, even when drinking the recommended amount.

For these reasons, we believe that green tea is the superior drink. But we’re not saying that coffee is bad, either! The neuroprotective effects of coffee are quite exciting, so slipping in a cup of joe every so often with your tea drinking probably doesn’t hurt. Balance is key!

Focus on Brain Health with Gotu Kola

Two leaves of gotu kola a day will keep old age away.” – Ancient Indian proverb regarding gotu kola

For thousands of years, the Ayurvedic physicians of India and the traditional doctors of China have used gotu kola (Centella asiatica) to address a number of health concerns.

Also commonly known as Asiatic Pennywort, this herb is a member of the parsley family. Though its origins have been traced to Asia, gradually it spread throughout Africa and parts of Europe. Now that it is used as an herbal supplement, you can find it growing throughout the entire world.

Gotu kola mostly grows in temperate and tropical climates in places with much water like swamps. This herb has long, slender stems ranging in color from green to an almost reddish color, and it grows in tight clumps. The leaves are rounded and veined throughout. Occasionally it produces small, inconspicuous flowers, and it has rhizomatic roots that grow straight down.

A Long History of Traditional Uses

The entire plant has been used since antiquity to the modern day for many illnesses. Throughout Asia, ancient doctors traditionally used this “herb of longevity” to address skin disorders, including scar reduction and as treatment for leprosy.

Herbalists and healers around the world have also used gotu kola for digestive issues, bronchial concerns, and as a tonic to rejuvenate tired skin and veins, and improving concentration and memory. Today, it is this last use that gotu kola is most famous for, and where much of the research is aimed.

Recent Research Supporting the Use of Gotu Kola

The main compounds found within the herb gotu kola seem to balance the central nervous system and increase the concentration of GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) within the brain. GABA is one of the most important neurotransmitters in the human body. Its primary purpose is to reduce the sensitivity of the nervous system.

According to a recent study conducted in Malaysia at the University of Kebangsaan in Kuala Lumpur in 2015-2016, the data suggests that some chemical constituents found within gotu kola act as neuroregenerative agents. These properties point to the possibility that it may be helpful either reducing incidences of early-onset dementia, Alzheimer’s, and other diseases that can affect memory and cognitive function as we age.

The scientific team in Malaysia also noted that the participants in the study seemed to have improved overall brain health, including learning and memory skills, and had been less prone to bouts of depression, anxiety, and stress.

One of the plausible reasons for this, according to the Malaysian study, is the possibility that gotu kola may also act as a neuron protector. The researchers hope that further study will prove that gotu kola can lessen the decline of loco-motor control. This is a characteristic of serious degenerative illnesses such as Parkinson’s disease.

What about the traditional use for skin diseases? A study conducted in South Africa researchers found that gotu kola contained compounds that seemed to have a balancing effect on connective tissue in the body.

The South African team found that in patients who had suffered second and third-degree burns, gotu kola caused a marked reduction of keloid scar tissue. Keloid tissue creates hard, large, and bumpy scars that are very hard to treat and can become disfiguring. They attributed this reduction, at least in part, to an increase in collagen production. This property also shortened the healing time for patients suffering from all types of severe burns.

Collagen is a crucial component of skin. It is the major protein that binds skin and connective tissue together. It also strengthens bones.

Incorporating Gotu Kola

Without a doubt, gotu kola is a powerful herb, but it must be used with care. Before adding gotu kola or any other supplements to your daily routine, it’s always a good idea to consult with your doctor first. Side effects of taking gotu kola may include dizziness, headaches, nausea, gastrointestinal discomfort, or feelings of over-tiredness.

Most importantly, there is a possibility of liver issues for some users. For those who have diabetes, patients being treated for liver disease, or are currently taking other medications, speak with your doctor before using it.

If you’ve been given the all-clear, you can give yourself the gift of good health with our full line of supplements with gotu kola. Keeping Your Joints Healthy Throughout Life

Our bones provide the underlying structure of our bodies and protect our internal organs while our joints affect our mobility throughout our lives. Protecting bones and joints is one of the most important, yet one of the most overlooked components of our overall good health.

We build up strong bones, teeth, and joints throughout our childhood, and on average, we are building up our bone mass until we reach peak bone mass at about age 30. From then on, adults will tend to lose slightly more bone mass than they gain. Our bones tend to become thinner and more brittle as we age.

While painful bones and joints tend to develop over time, researchers from around the world have found that there are ways to help maintain bone and joint health through nutrition and maintaining healthy habits throughout life.

  • Maintain Proper Nutrition – Getting enough calcium in your diet can help maintain good bone and joint health. Foods such as milk, yogurt, soy, cheese, spinach, and other leafy green vegetables are rich in calcium.
  • Drink Plenty of Water – Drinking enough water each day can go a long way to helping you to maintain good bone and joint health. For our bodies to produce enough synovial fluid and cartilage to keep our joints well lubricated, we need to drink an adequate amount of water every day.
  • Avoid Tobacco & Alcohol Use – Research has shown that the use of tobacco products and alcohol can leach calcium from our bones and teeth and weaken them over time. While a glass of wine or one alcoholic beverage per day is usually ok, having two or more drinks per day can increase the risk of developing conditions such as osteoporosis.
  • Get Plenty of Exercise – Having a routine of regular physical exercise, including walking, hiking, swimming, or bicycling, can help to maintain strong bones and supple joints.
  • Be Aware of the Side Effects of Certain Medications –Some medications can affect bone loss more than others. Some steroidal medications like cortisone, prednisone, and inhaled corticosteroids have been shown to increase bone loss and the development of osteoporosis.  Other medicines like anastrozole, which is used to treat breast cancer, can adversely affect bone health over time.
  • Boost Bone Health with Supplements – Recent research conducted by the Australian National Health Survey found that one of the best ways to maintain good bone and joint health is through nutritional supplements, especially when recommended by your doctor. According to recommendations by the National Institute of Health, the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for calcium is 1,000 milligrams per day. After age 50, the recommended RDA of calcium for women and men over age 70 should be 1,200 milligrams per day. For adults, the recommended RDA per day is between 600 and 700 IUs per day of Vitamin D3 to increase the absorption of calcium in the body.

At Sir Jason Winters International, we are proud to offer the highest quality supplements to help you maintain bone and joint health.

Glucosamine Recovery FormulaGlucosamine and glycosaminoglycans are elements that are naturally produced by our bodies. Both are instrumental in helping our bodies to produce collagen, which is used in the formation of cartilage and synovial fluid that keeps our joints lubricated. Our formula also contains Methylsulfonylmethane or MSM, and Vitamin C that is also used to form collagen.  We have also added Chondroitin Sulfate, which is crucial for the proper absorption of Glucosamine and gains its benefits within the body.

Our Glucosamine Recovery Formula is recommended to be taken once per day.   It comes in a bottle of 100 capsules and is regularly priced at $35.00 each.  We are now offering this exclusively formulated supplement for just $16.99  per bottle.

Chelated CalciumOur bodies require calcium to nerves, cells, muscle, and bone, joints, and teeth to remain strong and function properly. When we don’t get enough calcium through the food that we eat, our bodies will take it wherever it can. When this happens, the body will slowly leach calcium from our bones, making them weaker and causing the body to develop chronic conditions such as bone loss or osteoporosis.  Because we now know that people who take certain medications can suffer a loss of calcium, as can some women who are pregnant, nursing, or postmenopausal, taking a calcium supplement is recommended.  Researchers have found that the process of chelation, by binding calcium to amino acids, can help the body to absorb and utilize the calcium more readily.

Sir Jason Winters’ Chelated Calcium supplements are a proprietary blend that also contains Magnesium, Zinc, and 400 IUs of Vitamin D. Each bottle contains 90 tablets. Once you find out from your doctor or other healthcare professionals that taking a calcium supplement is right for you, as a dietary supplement, three tablets of our Chelated Calcium may be taken each day, preferably with meals.

Our Chelated Calcium is regularly priced at $12.90 per bottle and is now available for just $6.40 per bottle! That’s more than a 50% savings.

Vitamin D3 – Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol)  is a form of Vitamin D that can help your body to absorb calcium.

We usually get Vitamin D through our exposure to the sun. However, because of the wide use of sunscreens, protective clothing, and other factors, our ability to get enough Vitamin D may be limited.  To combat this, many doctors recommend taking a Vitamin D supplement to treat low calcium levels as well as to aid in the treatment of hypothyroidism and kidney disease. Vitamin D3 is also sometimes prescribed to patients to help lessen the side effects caused by certain medications that can cause calcium depletion.

Each gelcap of our Sir Jason Winters D3 supplement contains 10,000 IUs of Vitamin D3 and comes in a bottle of 90 capsules.  The gel caps make this supplement easy to absorb.  For adults, take just one capsule per day with a meal or as recommended by your doctor or other healthcare professional. Our Vitamin D3 supplement, regularly priced at $15.25 per bottle, is now available at substantial savings for the low price of just $9.95 for bottle!

You can also save an additional 5% for this and all other Sir Jason Winters supplements by taking advantage of our subscription service.  When you subscribe, you can have all of your supplements delivered safely and conveniently right to your door, either once every two weeks or once each month.

Focus on Your Heart Health with Sir Jason Winters Supplements

Focus on Your Heart Health with Sir Jason Winters Supplements –

Today, people are more interested and far better informed about how to lead and maintain healthier lifestyles. Eating a nutritious diet, getting enough sleep, engaging in a moderate level of healthy exercise, and maintaining a healthy weight have all been shown to vastly improve our chances of good health even as we get older.

At Sir Jason Winters International, we take great pride in carrying the highest quality teas and supplements to help you to take control of your health.  Here are some of the supplements and their ingredients that have been shown to promote heart health.

Vitamin C to Potentially Strengthen Cardiovascular Health – In our blog, we mentioned that Vitamin C had been researched for decades. Today it is the most widely used supplement in the U.S. for its potential value in reducing blood pressure, helping to remove high cholesterol, and help to reduce the amount of plaque that can lead to blockages in the arteries. A recent study conducted at UC Irvine found that Vitamin C works by helping to improve blood flow by making the walls of veins and arteries more elastic. Sir Jason Winters Vitamin C supplements are a whole supplementation choice containing the highest quality Vitamin C and other phytonutrients such as Citrus Bioflavinoid Complex, Rutin, Acerola, Quercetin, and Rose Hips.

The Antioxidant Powers Found Within CoQ10 – Coenzyme Q10 or CoQ10 that we naturally produce in our bodies and can be found in many of the foods we eat. This nutrient contains powerful antioxidants that can reduce the number of free radicals in the body and that we are exposed to in our everyday lives. Recent studies have found that taking a supplement of CoQ10 can potentially lower blood pressure and the risk of cardiac arrest or heart attack.  Sir Jason Winters CoQ10 supplements come in a bottle of 60 capsules, and each one contains 100 milligrams of Coenzyme Q10.

Krill Oil – The American Heart Association recommends consuming fatty fish or fish oils at least once a week.  Fish oils such as krill oil contain Omega-3 fatty acids. Fish such as salmon, mackerel, and krill contain these fatty oils that have shown some benefits in helping to maintain cognitive function, good joint health, and improve the immune system. The Omega-3s in krill oil can help improve “good”  or HDL cholesterol levels within the body while helping to lower levels of “bad” or LDL cholesterol.

Of course, not all fish oil supplements are the same.  While there are lots of different types of fish oils available on the market today, unlike other types of fish oils, krill oil tends not to have a fishy aftertaste. Each of our Sir Jason Winters Royal Crest Krill Oil supplements comes in an easy to absorb soft gel and contains 500 milligrams of purified Krill Oil. If, after consulting with your doctor or other healthcare professionals, it’s determined that taking a fish oil supplement is right for you, take one or two soft gels daily, preferably with meals.

Flax Seed Oil – Used since ancient times, medical researchers found that not just the plant but the seeds of Linum usitatissimum, commonly known as flax seeds, are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids. Among the many benefits of Flax Seed Oil that were discussed over in our blog, according to a recent study conducted by the Linus Pauling Institute, Flaxseeds contain the highest concentration of the Omega-3 known as Alpha-Linolenic Acid (A.L.A.).  Another study conducted in Costa Rica, researchers found that those who consumed foods high in A.L.A. potentially risked stroke or heart attack by 14% compared to those who had lower levels of Omega-3s in their daily diets.

Sir Jason Winters Organic Flaxseed Oil Supplement comes in a bottle of 100 softgels. Each softgel contains 1,000 milligrams of Lignan flaxseed oil. That’s at least 500 milligrams of A.L.A. Omega-3, 110 milligrams of Omega-6, AND 110 milligrams of Omega-9. We recommend taking no more than one softgel with each meal up to three times a day.

Psyllium Seed – The seeds of this member of the Plantain or Plantaginaceae species of plants have been used for millennia. Plantago Psyllium or psyllium seed is extremely water-soluble. Because of this, the seeds also expand as they dissolve.  Psyllium seed is used in a host of everyday products on the market as a thickener.  This expansion can cause one to feel fuller and eat less.

As we reported in our blog this July, a team of researchers from Australia and New Zealand found that this supplement has the potential to reduce LDL cholesterol and lower blood pressure that could potentially lead to a heart attack or stroke.  They found that the fiber contained within the husk of the psyllium seeds contains triglycerides that act to lower blood pressure within the body.

Each canister of our Sir Jason Winters Colon Cleanser Fiber Supplement contains 12 ounces of only the finest psyllium seed husk powder available. There’s no added sugar, flavors, or coloring to be found, just the pure goodness of psyllium.  One heaping teaspoon of psyllium seed husk powder added to 12 ounces or more of your favorite cold drink 1 to 3 times daily or as directed by your doctor is advised. Or, if you prefer, we also have our Sir Jason Winters Fiber Formula Supplement capsules available in bottles of 120 capsules.

The Ultimate Combination – This potent formula contains Indian Sage Leaf, Gotu Kola, Burdock, and Cayenne Pepper,  all of which researchers have shown the potential to maintain good cardiovascular health.  In the ancient Indian medical practice of Ayurveda, a team of researchers in India found that those taking Gotu Kola experienced a reduction of diastolic blood pressure compared to participants who took only a placebo.

As we mentioned in an earlier blog post about
Cayenne, Ayurvedic researchers also found that Cayenne Pepper (Capsicum annum) contains properties that increase blood flow.  Researchers also found that in addition to helping to maintain healthy blood sugar levels in the body, Cayenne also reduced blood pressure, and its antioxidant properties made it a strong candidate to potentially address some heart conditions.

Sir Jason Winters Ultimate Combination or T.U.C. contains six of the most potent and important herbs that we offer. Each capsule contains the goodness of Elecampane root, Burdock Root, Indian Sage Leaf, Cayenne, Gotu Kola Herb,  and Herbalene, our proprietary special herb. Of course, we always recommend that you discuss with your doctor first before taking this or any other supplement.  Each bottle of our T.U.C. formula contains 60 capsules formula that can be taken once or twice daily with meals.

Please visit our shop here, where we are now offering many of these supplements at substantial savings.  If you want to save an additional 5% on any of our products, you may also wish to take advantage of our subscription service and have them safely delivered directly to your home once a month or every two weeks.

You can order with the confidence knowing that every product that Sir Jason Winters sells is from the finest ingredients available from around the world and is 100% satisfaction guaranteed.
